Cardiff City mount ‘late push’ in bid to edge race for Liverpool man

Cardiff City are said to be making a late push to land Liverpool defender Nat Phillips this month. The Bluebirds are hoping to wrap up a number of signings late in the January window having been left frustrated so far.

Just days remain until the window slams shut, and the Bluebirds are expected to spend money having been restricted on the transfer front over recent times. A striker is the priority, and there has been some good news on that front, but Erol Bulut will also want to add depth to his back line if he can.

And transfer insider Alan Nixon has reported that City are indeed making a late push for a defender, attempting to land Nat Phillips from Liverpool on a loan deal. It’s claimed Blackburn Rovers were the favourites to land Phillips this month, but City could offer better terms, according to the report, potentially putting them in the driving seat at this stage.

Phillips has played very little football at Liverpool, and indeed in his career, featuring sparingly during a loan spell with Celtic last season. Unlikely to play for the Reds between now and the end of the season, a loan deal is likely, and a permanent deal may not be off the table at this point, either. A loan deal appears the most likely solution for the 26-year-old this month, though, and Cardiff are hoping they can edge one of their Championship rivals to the signing.
