Cardiff City ‘battle’ Premier League club to sign familiar Leicester City fringe star on loan

Cardiff City are said to be interested in Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward this month. The Bluebirds have relied heavily upon Jak Alnwick so far this season, while Arsenal loanee Runar Alex Runarsson has not impressed in his few opportunities.

Alnwick has done a solid job, but reports claim Erol Bulut may move to strengthen his goalkeeping department as he looks to keep his side in the playoff push. The Sun’s Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, has claimed the Bluebirds have expressed an interest in signing Leicester City and Wales keeper Ward, who has struggled for game time behind Mads Hermansen this term.

Ward was a regular for the Foxes in the Premier League last season after the departure of Kasper Schmeichel, but he has not managed to keep his place this term. A loan deal is now being mooted, and it is reported that Cardiff and Premier League strugglers Sheffield United are interested.

It would be a surprise to see Cardiff placing emphasis on signing a keeper, given they need to add significant quality in other areas if they want to sustain a playoff push. But if the report does prove true, it would seem Bulut is not convinced with Alnwick, and the signing of Ward on loan would surely mean Runarsson returns to Arsenal this month.

Runarsson is currently on loan until the end of the season, and Cardiff would likely have to pay a small compensation fee to Arsenal to end that deal early. The inexperienced Rohan Luthra, who only has one league appearance for the Bluebirds so far, is the only other current option between the sticks.
