Cardiff City chairman confirms club are in ‘very advanced’ stages of agreeing new training base

Cardiff City are in ‘very advanced’ stages of wrapping up a deal to build a new training ground. The Bluebirds have shared a facility with the FAW at the Vale hotel for the best part of two decades, but they have long had ambitions to have an exclusive base in a bid to step up preparations and training.

The club’s chairman Mehmet Dalman has now spoken about recent progress on that front, confirming that the club are close to agreeing a lease on a new base having already opened a glitzy new academy facility in Llanrumney.

“Firstly, the new academy training complex in the east of Cardiff came on stream as planned in time for the start of the 2023/24 season,” Dalman said, as cited by WalesOnline.

“This will undoubtedly build on the success of the last couple of years of players graduating from the academy to become integral members of the first team. Ongoing investment in the facility is planned as we look to improve and build on the quality of the playing surfaces and facilities themselves to secure the pipeline of talent that undoubtedly exists in our home city and surrounding areas.

“Secondly, the construction of a new first-team training base a short distance from our current base but one that will be wholly and exclusively for the use of the club.

“Negotiations for a 150-year lease over the proposed new training base are very advanced and we anticipate putting pen to paper on the lease early in 2024. Commencement on enabling works will then start shortly thereafter with a view to the new training centre being operational for season 2026/27.”

City boss Erol Bulet said of the plans: “This will be great. I think that Cardiff City needs a better training place. It would be real progress for the club.”
