Promotion heroes among five former Cardiff City players released by Championship clubs

A number of former Cardiff City men have been released following the conclusion of the season, with as many as five released by Championship clubs alone.

Three of those players are promotion heroes of the past, including goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who has been offloaded by Birmingham City after four years and 70 league appearances.

The other two promotion heroes were released by the same club, with both Sean Morrison and Lee Peltier bidding farewell to Rotherham United. Peltier was given a warm send off against Cardiff on the last day of the season. He made 53 league appearances in his two years there, while Morrison made 29 league appearances in just over a year.

Elsewhere, former City goalkeeper Simon Moore, who spent much of his time at the club as a number two, has been released by Coventry City. The now 34-year-old made 44 league appearances in four years with the Sky Blues.

Finally, Greg Cunningham has not been offered a new contract by Preston North End and will move on to pastures new. The 33-year-old was signed for City’s Premier League season but made just 12 league appearances in three years.

He returned to Preston in 2021 and has made 60 league appearances since. At the age of 33, he will now be on the lookout for a new club.
