Cardiff City ‘battle’ Portsmouth for defender as new contract confirmed

Cardiff City are said to be interested in a soon to be former Barnsley defender ahead of the summer transfer window. The Bluebirds will be looking to improve their squad this summer in order to improve on a respectable 12th place finish last term.

The back-line was not the biggest cause for concern last season, with scoring goals the most glaring issue for Erol Bulut, but that doesn’t mean the defence won’t be strengthened this summer.

According to the Portsmouth News, Cardiff are interested in a deal to sign soon to be former Barnsley man Jordan Williams. Williams, who featured in every one of the Tykes’ League One games last season, but his contract is up this summer, and he looks certain to land a Championship job.

Portsmouth and Cardiff are said to be battling for the 24-year-old right-back, who has made 158 league appearances for Barnsley. Perry Ng and Mahlon Romeo are Cardiff’s current main options at right-back.

City agree new deal

Elsewhere, Cardiff have announced they have agreed a new deal with goalkeeper Matthew Turner. The new deal keeps the keeper in place until the summer of 2026. The 22-year-old will likely be third-choice behind Ethan Horvath and Jak Alnwick next season.

Turner told club media after penning his new deal: “I’m delighted. It’s been on-going for a while, but I’m glad it’s all sorted now. It’s a proud moment for me and my family. Being from Wales, it’s a massive honour to play for Cardiff City. Working with Mario Galinović is brilliant. He teaches us a lot and for me as a young goalkeeper, I’ve got a lot to learn, so having him is ideal for me. I had around 20 appearances on the First Team bench last year. I’ve got two good goalkeepers ahead of me that I can learn from and we’ll see what happens. They’re both great and they’re open if I have any questions. They’re happy to help me and it’s great to learn from them.”
